Updated: Jun 30, 2023

When you are travelling it can sometimes be hard to stay focused on your wellness goals. Healthy food options while travelling may be few and far between and depending on the type of trip you are on, fitting in some daily movement may be challenging. Not to mention that packing all your supplements may not be possible.

While your routines may be off and you may be eating out more than usual, it is possible to stay healthy while travelling. Today I'm sharing my top tips for staying healthy while travelling and 6 healthy travel essentials to pack on your next trip.

How To Stay Healthy While Travelling

Balance Your Meals:

Do your best to ensure your meals are well-balanced and include protien, fibre and healthy fats. This will help keep your blood sugar balanced and provide you with more energy to keep up on those busy travel days.

Not every meal will be perfectly balanced and that's ok - after all, you are on vacation but focus on adding in fruits and veggies and getting an adequate amount of protien with your meals. Your goal is to balance the not-so-great meals with nutritious and healthy meals.

Eat The Rainbow:

Add lots of colourful fruits and veggies to your meals. Ensure that fresh produce has been washed well.

Stay Hydrated:

The benefits of staying hydrated are endless- improves digestion, reduces fatigue, reduces inflammation, keeps your skin hydrated, improves sleep, flushes out toxins and so much more so keeping up with hydration while away is important. If you find you are very active or sweating a lot add in electrolytes to help replenish your body.

Stick To Your Morning & Evening Routines:

When travelling your day-day routines go out the window and that's part of the allure and fun but sticking to your morning and evening routines will help you feel your best.

6 Healthy Travel Essentials To Pack:

1. Collagen:

Collagen has plenty of benefits but when I travel it helps me add a little protien to my day. I always take the small travel size packs and each pack has 10g of protien.

2. Digestive Enzymes & Digestive Bitters:

Digestive issues when travelling can be fairly common. Often when trying new foods or eating foods we don't typically eat it can lead to digestive issues. Adding digestive enzymes to help digest the food and get rid of any harmful bacteria on the food is always a must for me when travelling. Alternatively, you can also use digestive bitters before meals to help stimulate stomach acid and support digestion (do not use bitters if you experience upper gastric burning) Click here for the ones I recommend.

3. Herbal Teas:

Sometimes despite your best efforts digestive issues like bloating and constipation can occur. Pack some herbal teas to take along for when this occurs. Peppermint, lemon balm and ginger are great options.

4. Magnesium:

Magnesium is an essential nutrient and I never travel without it. I take it before getting on the plane to help with restless legs and every night before bed to help with sleep and relaxation.

5. Protein Bars:

Taking along a few protien bars to help get you through your long travel days is an easy way to fuel your body and avoid the fast food options often available at the airport.

6. Probiotics:

I include a probiotic in my daily supplement routine but when I travel I always take along a shelf-stable probiotic with me. When we are travelling and not eating the foods we are used to and potentially being exposed to harmful bacteria a good quality probiotic can go a long way in supporting your digestive health.
